Ridley Scott Wishes He Directed Blade Runner 2-February 2024
Feb 6, 2025 5:08 AM

While looking back at his illustrious career, Ridley Scott laments not directing Blade Runner 2049. The filmmaker has expressed frustration about how a scheduling conflict kept him away from helming the sequel to his sci-fi movie from 1982.

Scott discussed this regret with Empire (spotted by Deadline) while talking about the clash created by Alien: Covenant also being developed at the same time. He ended up helming the Prometheus sequel.

Now Playing: Blade Runner 2049 Video Review

"I shouldn’t have had to make that decision," Scott said. "But I had to. I should have done Blade Runner 2."

This isn't the first time Scott has offered his thoughts about the sci-fi sequel. In 2017, the director stated that Blade Runner 2049 "was f***ing way too long." The filmmaker was a producer on the movie and says he was a major contributor to the script, even though he's not credited.

Looking ahead, Scott will revisit the franchise as an executive producer on a live-action Blade Runner 2049 sequel series at Amazon. The show will be called Blade Runner 2099.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve ended up helming Blade Runner 2049 since Scott had the scheduling conflict. The movie starred Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Mackenzie Davis, Ana de Armas, Robin Wright, and Jared Leto.

Scott is directing a sequel to another one of his classics. He's helming Gladiator 2, which was filming in Malta before the Hollywood actors and writers strike.
