Red Dead Redemption Switch, PS4 & PS3 Comparison Shows an Impressive Switch Version
Red Dead Redemption Switch, PS4 & PS3 Comparison Shows an Impressive Switch Version-November 2024
Nov 11, 2024 10:09 AM

Red Dead Redemption is out now digitally for both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, and a comparison video shows an impressive Switch port.

Earlier this month, after numerous rumors that Rockstar might be working on a remaster of 2010's Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar Games confirmed that the western-themed action-adventure is coming to Nintendo's hybrid platform and PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, we aren't looking at a remaster of the game, but rather a port of the original PS3/Xbox 360 version with some visual and gameplay enhancements.

With the game out now digitally for PS4 and Switch, YouTuber 'ElAnalistaDebits' compared the new Switch and PS4 versions to the original PS3 version of the game to see how the game runs and which improvements have been implemented. On Nintendo's platform, the game runs in 1080p at 30FPS in docked mode, and 720p@30FPS in handheld mode. Similar to the Switch docked version, The PS4 version runs the game in 1080p@30FPS. For reference, the original PS3 version ran in 640p@30FPS.

Going by this first comparison video, the PS4 version benefits from better anti-aliasing, shows, and anisotropic filtering compared to the Switch. In addition, the PS4 version benefits from AMD FSR 2, thereby boosting image quality without affecting performance. The general takeaway, however, is that the Switch version is almost identical to the PS4 version with almost solid 30FPS performance.  As such, those owning both a PS5/PS4 and Switch might just as well get the Switch version to also be play this gem on the go.

We've included the comparison video below. Check it out yourself and let us know which version you prefer.

  - Red Dead Redemption on PS4/Switch is a remastered port of the original version. The main attraction of this version is the improved resolution and greater stability over the PS3 version.

  - PS4 includes the ability to enable AMD FSR 2. This helps improve image quality considerably without affecting performance.

  - PS4 features better shadows, anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing over Nintendo Switch.

  - Nintendo Switch is practically a 1:1 version of PS4. Personally, it's the version I would choose.

  - Switch's Handheld mode decreases rendering resolution, shadows, and anisotropic filtering.

  - Performance comes across as fairly robust on Switch and PS4 with no notable issues.

  - Pop-in is still present in these new versions, but with less intensity compared to the original version.

  - Faster loading times on Nintendo Switch. On PS3 loading times are 3 times slower.

Red Dead Redemption is out now digitally for Switch and PS4. Rockstar will release the PS4/Switch port physically on October 13th.
