Although Red Dead Redemption won't ship until May 18 in North America, Rockstar Games has already announced the first downloadable content for the game. The open-world Western's first batch of DLC will be offered free via the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live starting in June. (The game launches in Europe on May 21.)
Players will be able to form their own posse with Red Dead Redemption's co-op DLC.
As indicated in the title, the Outlaws to the End Co-Op Mission Pack will add cooperative play to the game, which comes with competitive multiplayer modes. (See below.) It will include six missions, each of which will support two to four players via online play. The Walton’s Gold mission will see players loot a gold mine rigged to explode, while The River follows players on a raft-borne raid on a rebel weapons depot. The Ammunition mission sees players storm a Mexican army stronghold, and Rockstar says the other three missions will be revealed "soon."
In development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 at Rockstar San Diego, Red Dead Redemption has had a rough road to release. Besides suffering from repeated delays, the game was beset with controversy following accusations of harsh working conditions by a person claiming to be the spouse of a developer toiling on the game.
Gatling guns will be among the weapons available in the Outlaws to the End Co-Op Mission Pack.
A follow-up to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, Redemption takes place during the same turn-of-the-century decline of the Wild West that was the setting for the classic film The Wild Bunch. Gamers will slip on the boots of John Marston, a former outlaw caught up in the uncertain times created by the industrial age encroaching on the American frontier.
Red Dead Redemption will be powered by Rockstar's proprietary RAGE engine, which was also the basis of Grand Theft Auto IV. Like its top-rated sibling, Redemption offers an open-world environment in which players can explore the vast regions of the West, from rolling grasslands to frontier towns. The third-person action game will also feature its fair share of action, including both mano-a-mano gunfights and larger battles.
