Sierra announced last week that it has stopped issuing those free accounts for its multiplayer online role-playing game.
Sierra issued a statement that read, in part, "A significant number of users of these free 30-day trial accounts have hacked into the game, thus wreaking havoc and causing chaos at best and outright devastation at worst to the game's steadily growing and fiercely loyal customer base."
Sierra's solution to the problem is to stop letting people try out the game free for a month. Now would-be Realm subscribers will need to fork out US$49.95 (plus any charges they might incur from their ISP) for a one-year subscription to the Realm. The game currently has close to 20,000 subscribers, Sierra says.
Steve Nichols, the lead designer and system architect for the game, said, "We have been dealing with serious hacking issues over the past few weeks, mostly from 'anonymous' 30-day account holders. Whilst we feel we have fixed the majority of the issues, we will continue to monitor the system and handle problems as they arise."
