ATI Technologies announced that the Rage 128 family of 2D, 3D, and video accelerators have all been built with optimizations for the new Intel Pentium III processor. The Rage 128 line includes Rage Fury, Rage Magnum, All-In-Wonder 128, XPERT 128, and XPERT 99. Pentium III's SIMB (Single Instruction Multiple Data) extensions and floating-point architecture are both supported in the chip's DirectX and OpenGL drivers. ATI reports that these optimizations have helped to increase Quake III Arena performance by over 20 percent.
For videophiles, the Rage 128 chip, along with the Rage Theater video encode/decode chip, will allow fast compression and decompression of MPEG-2 video. In short, you can make your own high-end DVD-like movies.
