33 years ago, in 1989, the original Quantum Leap hit the air and for five seasons we followed Dr. Sam Beckett through time as he tried to get back home. Now, physicist Ben Song (Raymond Lee) will follow in Beckett's footsteps--literally--in the upcoming Quantum Leap revival. Here's the first trailer for the upcoming series.
This isn't a reboot, but rather a continuation. As with Twin Peaks: The Return, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and so many others, Quantum Leap isn't seeking to overwrite the original series, but to add onto it. Protagonist Ben Song and his team restart the Quantum Leap project in an attempt to find out just what happened to Scott Bakula's character, Sam Beckett.
"Everything changes, however, when Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving the team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it," says the show's synopsis. "At Ben's side throughout his leaps is Addison (Caitlin Bassett), who appears in the form of a hologram only Ben can see and hear. She's a decorated Army veteran who brings level-headed precision to her job.
The overall format of the show looks quite similar to that of the original, with Song leaping from life to life in each episode, righting wrongs with Addison's help. The original series never brought its protagonist home; with the series acting as a continuation and seemingly spending a lot more time with its modern-day characters, that cliffhanger ending--and maybe even Scott Bakula himself--could play into the new series. Quantum Leap premieres on NBC on September 19 at 10 pm.
