PS4 Firmware 5.50 Introduces System Wide Supersampling; Sony Warns It Can Lower Frame Rate in Some Instances-February 2024
Feb 4, 2025 12:52 AM

PlayStation 4 firmware 5.50 (beta) is now available for download in certain countries such as Poland. Users are still discovering its new features but the biggest one seems to be the introduction of a system wide supersampling solution, an area where PlayStation 4 Pro was sorely lacking compared to Xbox One X. Below you can find a screen grab and our translation of it.

Supersampling mode allows you to get picture quality comparable with 4K even when connecting PS4 Pro to a TV with a resolution of 2K or below

The effect depends on the game - not every improvement will be noticeable. In some games, you can also reduce the frame rate per second.

This is definitely great news for all those who own a PlayStation 4 Pro and haven't upgraded yet to a 4K TV. Until now only a few games such as Guerrilla's Horizon: Zero Dawn had employed their own supersampling solution, but with this new feature it looks like every game will now be able to do the same.
