Planetweb and Ergosoft, a wholly owned subsidiary of Koei, have shipped their PlayStation 2 browser to retailers in Japan. Consumers will now be able to enjoy such functions as Web browsing, e-mail, and chat on their PS2 consoles. The so-called EGBROWSER supports the growing array of USB modems for the PS2. In fact, the software itself can be purchased as part of bundles that include various USB modems.
"Planetweb is excited to provide an Internet solution for the PlayStation 2 in Japan," Ken Soohoo, president and CEO of Planetweb, said. "The Planetweb browser and libraries will play a pivotal role in expanding the PlayStation 2 experience into the online world."
The Planetweb software will support the use of USB mouse and keyboard peripherals on the PS2. Ergosoft will license the TCP/IP network stack library and browser to game developers.
