PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Has A Backstory, But Don’t Expect A Single-Player Mode-November 2024
Nov 14, 2024 12:51 AM

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a gripping experience that’s captured the imaginations of over 17 million players, but it isn’t for people who need their games to have a story of any kind. You’re trapped on an abandoned Russian island with 99 other people and have to kill to survive. That’s all you get. If you want any backstory or motivation, you have to make it up yourself.

Well, surprisingly, PlayerUnknown himself (aka Brendan Greene) let slip at a PAX Aus panel that there actually is an official PUBG backstory, although he didn’t provide any further details. So, if PUBG has lore, does that mean we could see a single-player story mode some day? It seems like not even Greene himself knows. Last month, he had this to say about a single-player campaign…

"I would love to add a single-player campaign to the game. I think the island we have could be a great location for an interesting story, but unfortunately we just don't have the resources at the moment!"

Okay, sounds somewhat promising. Greene at least wants to do a single-player mode! Unfortunately, at PAX Aus, Greene seemed more cautious about the idea.

“Because of the lore of the island, there was an idea that I had for what I thought would be a pretty cool single-player mode. Maybe even a co-op single-player campaign. We have no resources. We have no time. We have no plans to add anything like this to the game. No single-player is coming to Battlegrounds."

Single-player PUBG sounds interesting in theory, but it is hard to envision how a game that’s all about huge 100-player battles would pull off a solo mode. If a single-player mode isn’t in the cards, hopefully Greene and developer Bluehole can find other ways to slip some lore into the game.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is currently available via Steam Early Access. The full-release version is scheduled to hit PC and Xbox One before the end of the year.
