It all started when Jason Hall, CEO of Monolith, said that he would bet US$100 that Monolith's Craig Hubbard could beat Ferrari-owner and the Quake deathmatch master, Thresh. At the time, it was just something that Jason had overheard in the hall at Monolith, but it seemed interesting enough to be placed in his plan file (plan files are the newest craze with game company employees who want to tell the world about the games they're working on or to tell about the latest movie they liked). Jason also stated in his challenge that his champion, Craig, could "Whoop Thresh at Quake." And that really started it all.
So when a man makes a bet, someone at the table needs to match it or raise it. Angel L. Munoz, CEO of NewWorld Inc. (the Adrenaline Vault and the new Game-Wire), responded in a poker-like tone, "OK, Jason, I'll bite. I bet you $2,000 that Thresh kicks Craig's ass. And more, I will gladly host the event here in Dallas in a special location and invite the media to witness Craig's humiliation."
Many gamers were expecting that this standoff was going to break up sooner or later until Jason updated his plan file with his counter bluff, "Let's get serious! $25,000 is more like it! Let's make the stakes worth sweating over."
But Thresh didn't say anything about the fact that all this money was being bet on his ability to go up against Monolith's champion.
So the tension increased as Munoz threw in a larger bet. "I'll bet you $25,000 US Dollars that Thresh completely shreds Craig to pieces, quickly and effectively. And because I think you are bluffing, I'll throw in this little incentive for you: For every frag that Craig nails on Thresh I will pay you $1,000," Munoz challenged. "So what's it going to be?"
Finally, Thresh responded last night on Gamer's Extreme: Front Line with, "Angel, I'm flattered that you are willing to support me, but I would prefer to let my own company set forth the money in this matter. Gamers Extreme has been generous enough to spot the $25,000 to match Jason's bet. So Craig and Jason, we'll be in contact to set a time and a place."
The bets have been placed, but the battle has yet to be set. What will become of NewWorld's bet? Will the battle be fought in Dallas? Right now, deathmatchers nationwide are waiting with baited breath to see Thresh defend his champion title on the deathmatch battleground.
