Sun-Denshi has announced that it has begun shipping the OnlineStation, the USB-compatible 56k modem that enables Internet functions on the Sony PlayStation 2. The device is currently shipping only in Japan, but a North American and European release is being strongly considered at this time. The device includes PCTEL's Solsis software-based modem technology.
"PCTEL's modem technology is playing a key role in helping us bring Internet gaming products to market quickly and cost-effectively,'' said Hiroaki Higashiya, manager for the Sunsoft division of Sun-Denshi. "Sun-Denshi's OnlineStation modem and browser application, exclusively designed for the SCEI PlayStation 2, will immerse consumers in a new and exciting Internet environment."
The OnlineStation should not be confused with Sony's official 56k modem for the PS2, which will also be released this year. The OnlineStation can be seen 2602904here .
