Intel and Via announced today that a lawsuit over Via's popular K7 chipsets for Athlon PCs has been dropped. While Via claimed "total victory" in the lawsuit, Intel's statement explains that a settlement was only reached after Via redesigned its K7 chipsets to avoid infringing on Intel's patents. The K7 patent lawsuit dates back to July 2000 and is only one of a number of recent patent conflicts between Intel and Via. This settlement does not affect Intel's ongoing lawsuit against Via over its Pentium 4 DDR chipset. Unlike some other third-party chipset makers, Via chose not to pay Intel a licensing fee for the technology to interface with the Pentium 4 processor.
