Obsidian Is Hiring for a New RPG Featuring ‘Exceptional First-Person Melee Combat’ and Multiplayer-October 2024

Obsidian Entertainment may be polishing up The Outer Worlds ahead of the game's October 25th release date, but they're also already gearing up for another project, as mentioned by Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg.

Last week they posted eleven job ads on LinkedIn, which provide a picture of what kind of game it will be. The studio described it as a 'world-class RPG' made in Unreal Engine 4 (just like The Outer Worlds), but the most interesting tidbits are arguably the multiplayer (Obsidian is looking for a Network Programmer and even the Gameplay Programmer position has 'multiplayer game development experience' listed as a plus) and the focus on first-person melee combat for the position of Combat Designer.

Obsidian Entertainment is looking for a Combat Designer with proven experience developing first-person melee combat gameplay to join our team of talented developers.

This role will work closely with artists, animators, audio, and gameplay programmers to determine the overall flow, look, and feel of the total combat experience. The ideal candidate will be someone who can collaboratively plan and create fun, visceral, and epic combat including the main character, AI characters, and gameplay objects across varied encounter types.

The project is also described as multiplatform, though that's not really news since all Xbox Game Studios titles have been bound for both PC and Xbox One for quite a while now. It is doubtful that could mean a truly multiplatform release on Sony and/or Nintendo consoles since Microsoft clarified just recently that there are no plans to further expand first-party games to those platforms.

As to what it could be, it's anyone's guess at this point. It may be another new IP, or perhaps something like a revival of a long-lost Microsoft owned IP. If that was indeed the case, we'd bet on Shadowrun as a strong candidate.
