Obsidian Confirm Their New RPG Published by Private Division Won’t Have Any Microtransactions-September 2024
Sep 20, 2024 7:58 AM

We've known for quite a while that Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind classic roleplaying games such as KOTOR II: Sith Lords, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny, had been working on a fairly large scale RPG.

This project, led by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky of Fallout and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines fame, has been confirmed last week to be published by Take-Two's brand new label Private Division.

With Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick mentioning a while ago that all Take-Two games going forward would count on "recurrent consumer spending" more than game sales, fans got a little worried about Obsidian's new project. However, the developers were quick to address this concern in an official capacity.

We’re extremely excited about our upcoming RPG, and we know you are too. We wish we could tell you all about it right now… but we’re going to hold off until the time is right. What we did want to talk about was a question a lot of you have been raising: “Will this upcoming game feature any loot boxes or other microtransactions?”

The answer is simply: “no.” No microtransactions, of any kind, in our game.

We also wanted to say a word about our partnership with Private Division, our publisher on this title. Far from “pushing” us to put anything -- microtransactions or otherwise -- into our game, Private Division has been incredibly supportive of our vision, our creative freedom, and the process by which we work to make RPGs. They have been fantastic partners, and we are extremely excited to work with them through release, to put what we know is going to be an amazing game into as many hands as possible.

As always, thank you so much for your support. We know we couldn’t do what we do without our fans, and we want you to know that we put you guys first in every decision we make.

It is unclear yet what kind of RPG Cain and Boyarsky are really making, particularly with regards to the setting, though the two said in a recent interview that fans will be able to find Obsidian's trademark reactive worlds and humor while playing it.

We'll have to wait a couple years, though, as none of the games announced to be among Private Division's first wave of releases will ship before Q2 2019.
