Oak Says Adios to 3D
Oak Says Adios to 3D-October 2024
Oct 20, 2024 1:32 AM

Last week, GameSpot News noticed a story that didn't get much press but may indicate an impending shakeout in the 3D developer arena.

Reuters reported on Jan 22 that Oak Technology would be getting out of the PC audio and 3D graphics accelerator market and would instead focus on optical storage, consumer electronics, and digital office equipment.

Oak Technologies' chairman and CEO, David Tsang, said, "Our PC audio and graphics businesses accounted for less than 5 percent of this quarter's revenues and approximately 30 percent of operating expenses."

Apparently the company is looking for parties to take over its PC audio and graphics business.

Oak was working on a 3D accelerator called Warp 5. Tsang cited that the reason for Oak's departure from the market was that the 3D accelerator market was highly competitive and posed limited opportunities for his company.
