Nvidia Jumps on the Mac-October 2024
Oct 18, 2024 10:21 PM

Although it has been well known since the launch of the GeForce2 MX that it is Nvidia's first Mac-compatible graphics chip, the company's Mac plans for the chip were not fully revealed until this morning. At MacWorld Expo today, Apple announced four new desktop configurations based on the PowerPC G4 processor, and the top three of these include the Nvidia chip. After a long performance plateau at 500MHz, Apple has also finally increased its G4 clock speeds, which now range from 466MHz up to 733MHz.

Interestingly enough, those who build systems to order on Apple's Web site will have the option of replacing the GeForce2 MX with a Radeon 32MB DDR card for no additional charge. Due in part to its faster DDR memory, the Radeon significantly outperforms the GeForce2 MX (look here for detailed test info).

The least expensive G4 desktop system, which costs US$1699, will still use ATI's Rage 128 graphics card. The GeForce2 MX-equipped systems run from $2199 to $3499.
