If you weren't a fan of The Witcher 3's combat, then a new mod may be right for you. Instead of slicing into your enemies, you'll be throwing down Gwent cards to defeat them.
First noticed by Kotaku, the sped-up Hearts of Card demo video shows how the mod works. When an enemy or the player takes damage, it initiates a game of Gwent. If you win, all enemies within 30 units are killed. If you lose, you die.
Although you won't hear anything resembling Yu-Gi-Oh in the actual game, you should be able to play through the entire campaign this way, according to Nexus mod creator DickDangerJustice.
The mod is still in development and the creator says that they're planning to create a new progression system for getting Gwent cards and to restructure the economy to be card-focused, so you'll find "booster packs" at shops. It's also planned for significant bosses to drop special cards.
The mod is available for download right now through Nexus Mods. GameSpot talked to CD Projekt RED about The Witcher 3 mod tools back in August. On the same day, it was announced that the Witcher developer was talking to Microsoft and Sony about bringing mods to the console versions of The Witcher 3.
The open-world RPG's card game Gwent has proved quite popular. Tabletop Simulator saw a mod that allows players to play Gwent outside of The Witcher 3. And The Witcher 3's first expansion Hearts of Stone had a retail version that came with a physical set of Gwent cards. However, in a September interview with GameSpot, CD Projekt RED said there were no plans to make a fully fledged, standalone physical card game.
