Chip designer Nvidia will provide Microsoft with a second chip for the Xbox, along with the already announced graphics chip the company is developing for Microsoft's console, according to a CNet report. Two of the three main processors used in the Xbox console - the graphics processor and the unspecified second chip - will be developed by Nvidia.
"Nvidia is developing two of the devices," the company's CEO Jen Hsun Huang said at the recent Robertson Stephens Semiconductor Conference in San Francisco. With Intel's Pentium III serving as the core processor for the console, it is possible that Nvidia could provide both the GPU and the audio architecture for the Xbox. However, development of the audio architecture for the Xbox would be a first for Nvidia, which is known primarily for its production of advanced graphics chips.
Microsoft has not commented on the report.
