Nintendo Switch 2 Should Have Backward Compatibility Because Consumers Want It, Take-Two CEO Says-October 2024
Oct 20, 2024 5:27 AM

The Nintendo Switch 2 backward compatibility is still up in the air, but the new console should be compatible with the games released for its predecessor simply because it is what consumers want, according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick.

Speaking during the publisher's latest financial call, as reported by GamesIndustry, Zelnick commented about the Switch 2 backward compatibility, saying that not giving the console backward compatibility would be not fulfilling the contract with consumers, as a manufacturer has to do the very best for them, give them what they want and optimize their experience. Not having backward compatibility could improve revenue for a short period of time, but at a high cost, according to Zelnick. So, if there aren't any technical issues preventing this from happening, the console should have backward compatibility.

As already mentioned, it's not yet clear if the Nintendo Switch 2 will have backward compatibility. Last week, we reported that some developers said that it does, while others said it didn't, so the situation is not clear at all. Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa himself hinted back in June at the fact that the company's next console may be compatible with games released for its predecessor with the Nintendo account system smoothing the transition between systems, but other than this, no official statement has been released on the matter so far.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has yet to be officially announced.
