Nintendo Dominated December With Big Switch and 3DS Sales According to NPD-October 2024
Oct 23, 2024 1:22 AM

The NPD Group has yet to release their full sales data for December 2017, but the corporate boasting has already begun. Last week Microsoft revealed the Xbox One bested the PS4 in December, but ultimately came in second to the Nintendo Switch, and now The Big N has revealed some details of their own.

According to Nintendo, the Switch moved an impressive 1.5 million units in December, it’s biggest month to date. The Switch sold 4.8 million units in 2017, which is the best first year for a console in U.S. history. The PS4 won November, largely due to some appealing limited-time discounts, but once the sales came to a close, it seems it was the Switch consumers wanted.

Perhaps more impressive (or, at least more surprising) than the Switch sales, was the continued success of the humble 3DS. Nintendo’s handheld moved 750,000 units in December, which was a 27 percent increase over last year, and the 3DS’ best sales month since December 2014. If you’ve ever wondered why Nintendo refuses to give up on the 3DS now that the more capable Switch is on the scene, well, there you go. It seems there’s still a market for a dedicated portable.

Overall, 2.6 million units of Nintendo hardware (which includes the SNES Classic Edition) were sold in the US in January. Doing a bit of quick math, that means the SNES Classic sold 350,000 units.

Nintendo also did pretty well on the software front -- Super Mario Odyssey came in at No. 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at No. 4, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at No. 9, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon for Nintendo 3DS at No. 13 and No. 14, and Splatoon 2 at No. 16. Some surprising numbers on there – wouldn’t have expected Mario Kart to beat Zelda, and Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon has dropped down the charts fast.

We’ll bring you the full December 2017 sales charts when the NPD releases their data.
