Imagine Media closed Next Generation as of this morning. The January 2002 issue, which will ship to newsstands later this month, will be the magazine's last issue.
In a letter to advertisers, Jonathan Simpson-Bint, president of Imagine Media, said that the 6-year-old publication's "time now seems to have passed." Next Generation hit its peak popularity in 1996, and its circulation has since dropped to a modest 115,000, according to an Imagine press release. Imagine's parent company, Future Publishing, has experienced significant financial difficulties over the last year, and last spring closed dozens of publications worldwide in an effort to cut its operating losses.
The GameSpot staff would like to express its regrets about the closing of this highly influential games magazine, and wishes the best for all who worked on it.
