The acquisitions continued at News Corp. this week as the Rupert Murdoch-owned media giant confirmed today it had purchased IGN Entertainment. IGN Web sites include IGN.com, GameSpy.com, TeamXbox.com, and Rottentomatoes.com. News Corp. said it paid $650 million for the properties.
The acquisition follows closely on the heels of the $580 million price tag News Corp. paid in July for Intermix Media, known primarily for its MySpace.com social networking site. And last month, News Corp. said it would acquire Scout Media, a Seattle-based publisher that operates a network of more than 200 sports Web sites and publishes 47 team-specific sports magazines.
Today's Wall Street Journal, citing industry sources, revealed that News Corp. "beat out" Viacom, which was also interested in acquiring the company.
