The latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM) features a demo of Spider-Man for the PlayStation. Being the enthusiasts that we are, we gave the demo a play-through and have put together some new media and impressions for you. Although the demo was short, it gave us a very good idea of exactly how the game is shaping up.
In the demo, Spidey has to get to a bank in time to prevent a group of well-armed thieves from robbing the joint. The demo opens with some groovy tunes as Spidey hops onto a rooftop and says, "Just another day for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!"
Black Cat immediately shows up and gives Spidey a few pointers, and then it's up to you to navigate the wall-crawler to the bank. What immediately stands out about your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is the movement of the characters. Neversoft has done a great job of making Spidey move exactly as he would in the comic books - his stance is broad and powerful, his shoulders are slightly back, and his motion is extremely expressive of Spidey's agility.
The graphics are very sharp, and the attention to detail is certainly there. The characters' outfits are true to the comic book, and the city is modeled after the Marvel version of New York - right down to an appearance of both the Daily Bugle building and the Fantastic Four's spaceship/headquarters. The sound is really cool too - most of the major characters talk, and the voices are actually really good. Running through the soundtrack is some fresh astro-boogie bass funk, keeping the audio department as groovin' as the rest of the game.
There's also some cool things like spider-sense, wall-climbing, and different web attacks. Spidey can shoot big balls of webbing to stun enemies, or long lines of webbing to tangle enemies. He can also make web "claws" to increase the power of his punches, or a web shield that protects him - until he breaks out of it, which sends shards of webbing every which way, causing damage to enemies.
From what little you can see in the demo, Spider-Man is shaping up to be one of the best superhero games ever to make its way to the video-game market. The game is scheduled to hit shelves in June, but in the meantime check out these screenshots for a new look at the blue and red wonder.
