New Look at 64DD Talent Studio
New Look at 64DD Talent Studio-December 2024
Dec 14, 2024 2:31 AM

Of all the 64DD titles shown at Space World, in this editor's opinion Talent Studio best showed off the capabilities of the add-on system. With the ability to capture photos of people, store them, and then edit them at one's discretion, it's easy to see why.

Other 64DD titles, such as the F-Zero track expansion game (which allows you to create custom tracks), just don't seem to entice me to purchase the hardware add-on - especially when you consider that other titles like Excitebike and Mini Racers are coming with track editors included. And even titles that do happen to use the multimedia functions of the 64DD, such as SimCity 64 (which allows you to capture pictures of people to incorporate them into the game), just don't offer anything as new and revolutionary as Talent Studio. However, it's not easy for us to convey with words just how cool this software app is. That's why today we have put together a video showcasing this game.

The first part of the video displays a Space World attendee playing Talent Studio. His picture has been captured into the game, and he is now editing his look. And then there is footage of me dancing. Yes folks, it's my mug (albeit a bit funky-looking - for some reason the lighting around my eyes is strange) on the disco superstar. And although I really had nothing to do with how my image danced or moved around, I'd say my 64DD persona (my Mini-Me of sorts) pretty much replicated my real-life grooving abilities quite well.

So, is Talent Studio the kind of killer app that can help the N64 and its 64DD compete with new systems like the Sega Dreamcast or the upcoming PlayStation2? By conventional means, no - the graphics look dated compared with the next-generation offerings, and there's not much actual gameplay to be found. But if you're the type of person looking for some sort of new game-playing experience - something I've always come to count on Nintendo to provide - this is it. I've simply never come across a game like this before, and it completely drew me in. Talent Maker serves as the perfect waste of time.
