New 2.5D side-scrolling beat 'em up revealed, runs on Unreal Engine 4-November 2024

New Boston studio Rotary Games, founded by former staffers at 38 Studios (Kingdoms of Amalur) and Turbine (Lord of the Rings Online), today launched a Kickstarter campaign for a 2.5D side-scrolling beat 'em up. Called Rudo Resurrection, the game is coming to PC and runs on Epic's Unreal Engine 4. Rotary Games is asking for $50,000 to make the game, though there are many stretch goals for overflow funding, such as a release on Xbox 360 and Xbox One if funding hits $250,000.

What sets Rudo Resurrection apart from other side-scrollers is that it features wrestlers from Chikara, an American professional wrestling organization influenced by the mexican style of Lucha Libre wrestling. Some of the wrestlers that will be featured in Rudo Resurrection include Fire Ant, Green Ant, and assailANT.

"Our inspiration for Rudo Resurrection has been both traditional side-scrolling beat 'em up games like Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and X-Men Arcade, along with newer games in this genre like Castle Crashers," Rotary Games lead designer Jesse Smith said in a statement. "Our game will pay homage to these classics and new games alike. Even if you aren't familiar with Chikara and its characters, we're creating a game that all fans of the beat 'em up genre are bound to love."

Rotary Games says the world of Rudo Resurrection is heavily inspired by comic book art and will have a "vibrant" feel to it. At the beginning of the game, you'll have access to three characters, but you can unlock new players as you progress through various levels.

Eventually, you'll be able to form your own "trio" and instead of having three lives, you'll be able to use three different characters to move through the game. When one character is defeated, you can swap to your second character, and then to your third if you need to.

Finally, Rotary Games says the characters in Rudo Resurrection will have signature and special attacks, some of which will be "crazy" and "ridiculous," the developer says. These moves will do significant damage, but as you'd expect, you'll be limited in the number of times you can use them during a level.
