Applied Research Associates announced today that it has licensed the NetImmerse 3D engine, which is currently being used to develop Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee for the Xbox and Star Trek: Bridge Commander for the PC. The company originally planned to use the engine to construct different types of environments for a chemical manufacturer, but the company also expressed hopes that the software it creates will eventually be used to train HazMat teams to help them respond more efficiently to hazardous material accidents. "Our environment will allow HazMat response teams to visualize, communicate, and rehearse," said Phil Egly, Applied Research Associates' project manager. "They will be able to discern instantly the source of danger, where evacuation should occur, and if there is a possibility for casualties. They can then react quickly to manage the situation."
