Netflix is digging its heels in on revamping the classic He-Man cartoon with Masters of the Universe: Revelation. The new series from Mattel Television is hitting the streaming service on July 23, and the first images have been revealed, and if you loved the original cartoon, you'll probably love Revelation.
The Mattel Television series comes from showrunner Kevin Smith (Clerks), and the show picks up right where the original series left off: a battle between He-Man and Skeletor has left Eternia fractured, and Teela wants to reunite the heroes of the land to help find the missing Sword of Power. Part 1 of the series will consist of five episodes.

There are a lot of familiar voices in Revelation. Mark Hamill (Star Wars) will play Skeletor, Chris Wood (Supergirl) plays He-Man/Prince Adam, and Stephen Root (Office Space) will voice He-Man's trusty cat Cringer. The show also features Lena Headey, Griffin Newman, Henry Rollins, Tony Todd, and Kevin Conroy. Masters of the Universe: Revelation is produced by Mattel Television, featuring animation from Powerhouse Animation, which also animated Netflix's Castlevania.
Showrunner Smith has a fondness for the original series, and wants to create something that really follows in the footsteps of it. "Narratively our show is set up as the next episode in the legacy ‘80s animated series that aired from 1983-1985," Smith said in a press release. "This is a continuation of that story. We're playing with the original mythology and characters, and revisiting and digging deeper into some of the unresolved storylines. Visually we also made the conscious decision to lean into the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE line of toys for inspiration as well. Mattel owns this entire vast library of that artwork, so right away we wanted the show to open with classic pieces of that artwork. Mattel has been committed to this look since they first started as a toy line in the '80s, and now we’re leaning into it and honoring it."
Additionally, Mattel will be producing a toy line for Revelation arriving at major retailers on June 15, with additional toys coming in the fall.
