Mythic Games, the developer of such online-only multiplayer games as Aliens Online, Rolemaster: MageStorm, and most recently, Spellbinder: The Nexus Conflict, announced its next project today: Dark Age of Camelot. Dark Age of Camelot will be a persistent-universe massively multiplayer online RPG in the vein of EverQuest and Asheron's Call. Like Spellbinder, Dark Age will be powered by the NetImmerse engine (which was used by Red Orb Entertainment for Prince of Persia 3D).
In the game, players will play a character from the Briton, Norse, or Celtic realms just after the demise of King Arthur himself. Now that Arthur is gone, the kingdom has been divided into three parts, and each of the three rival factions is competing for control of the land. It's up to players to explore their own realms, solve quests, gain items and wealth, and eventually become powerful enough to challenge players from other realms.
Interestingly, Dark Age will feature both player-vs.-environment and player-vs.-player gameplay. Player characters will begin their lives in the relatively safe training areas of their own realm, where players of the same race cannot attack each other. However, should any player characters venture forth into one of the other two rival realms, they may attack and be attacked by player characters of that race.
