Bungie is raising the bar with Myth II: Soulblighter by adding wide support for an array of competing graphics and audio chips. Myth: The Dark Lords when first released took gamers by storm by adding a 3D strategic environment that crushed many other RTS titles. The second title in the series will have more support beyond the 3Dfx Glide-only support that existed in the first title. Graphics acceleration will include continued support for 3Dfx's Glide API as well as the Microsoft Direct3D API that adds support for other graphics cards including ATI, Matrox, nVidia, and Rendition.
Of course, Bungie will add more 3D terrain, 3D objects with more animations, more persistent objects, and particle system effects to Myth II. A revamped magic system provides more transparency effects and particle systems to fill the air, which will enhance smoke effects from 3D fires and the like. Many of these effects will still work in the software rasterized version of the game if you don't have a 3D accelerator but will be greatly enhanced if you do.
Myth II will now include 3D positional audio effects with support for Aureal's A3D and Creative Labs' Environmental Audio Extensions (EAX). Gamers will be able to hear mortar shells as they launch and will be able to hear what direction the shells are coming in from. Indoor environments are enhanced with EAX's reverb effects as the clash of weapons and groans of battle take on a completely different soundscape when compared with the sounds of battle in an open field.
