Oct 21, 2024 1:33 AM

New Line Cinema has announced further casting selections for Mortal Kombat 2, adding several new actors to the ensemble. According to Deadline, Martyn Ford (Red Sonja), Desmond Chiam (Joy Ride), Ana Thu Nguyen (Suka), and Damon Herriman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) have been confirmed to take on roles in the upcoming film.

Ford will portray the character of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, Chiam has been cast as Edenian King Jerrod, while Nguyen will play the role of Queen Sindel. Herriman is set to portray the Netherrealm demon Quan Chi.

The sequel follows the success of the 2021 action adventure film Mortal Kombat, which was based on the popular video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Released in April 2021, the original movie achieved significant box office success, grossing over $84.4 million worldwide. It also became one of the most-watched titles on the streaming platform now known as Max.

While the plot details of Mortal Kombat 2 remain under wraps, the first film revolved around MMA fighter Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, as he fought against adversaries from Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the fate of the universe. The sequel will feature the return of the original cast, including Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero (or Noob Saibot?), Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao. Additionally, newcomers such as Karl Urban, Tati Gabrielle, and Adeline Rudolph will join the cast.

Simon McQuoid, who directed the first film, will return to helm Mortal Kombat 2 from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater. The producing team includes James Wan and Michael Clear from Atomic Monster, Todd Garner from Broken Road Productions, as well as McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh.

Mortal Kombat 1, a game that is a sort-of-reboot for the series, is out later this year.
