More Xbox One games will run in 1080p over time, Microsoft says-October 2024

More Xbox One games will run in 1080p...eventually, Microsoft Xbox director of development Boyd Multerer has said in a new interview. Speaking with TotalXbox, Multerer said he has no doubt that developers will be able to reach that resolution as they discover and improve upon development techniques.

"I fully expect that to happen," Multerer said. "The [graphics processing units] are really complicated beasts this time around. The hardware is basically baked, and what comes next is people discovering better software techniques to take advantage of it, especially in the ordering of the data so it flows through all the caches correctly, and I think there's a lot of opportunity there."

Speaking about the Xbox One's ESRAM specifically, he said: "this is where tuning your data set becomes super important.

Multerer said some developers of Xbox One launch titles didn't have a real opportunity to focus on boosting visual performance, but this will change, he said.

"Once these engines--the engine developers like Frostbite [Battlefield 4] and those guys--they really wrap their heads around this particular GPU architecture, then all of the titles coming out of that studio will take advantage of it and get better," he saod.

Overall, Multerer said Xbox One owners can expect "fairly large improvements in GPU output" over time.

Much has been made of the fact that right now, more high-profile games run in 1080p on PlayStation 4 compared to the Xbox One. Sony responded to the 1080p/60fps debate last month, saying better performance on PS4 over Xbox One is because Sony's console is "performing and packing the punch that developers want." Meanwhile, Microsoft previously contended that "these little things get way overblown" concerning the Xbox One's library and what's truly important to players.
