A number of DirectX developments have surfaced this week, including the release of DirectX 8.0 and the ATI's announcement earlier this week that it would support DirectX VA. This standard hasn't received much public attention, but it promises to ease the development and support of DVD and other media player software that can take advantage of a graphic card's video acceleration capabilities. Before the introduction of the video acceleration API, software makers had to specifically support products on a case by case basis.
Today, Nvidia officially announced its support of DirectX VA. As it appeared that all the major graphics card makers were adding their support for Microsoft's latest initiative, GameSpot asked 3dfx if it would step in behind the standard. 3dfx told us that it would in fact follow the standard, as it was one of the companies that worked with Microsoft to author DirectX VA.
