Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition will launch in the PlayStation Store beginning this Tuesday, December 17, Mojang has announced on the PlayStation Blog.
Versions of the game for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita are also in development, but release dates for those iterations have not been announced.
"Expect more news in the New Year," Mojang said.
Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition features everything found in the Xbox 360 version. "They're pretty much identical to play and will be developed in tandem from now on," Mojang said.
Downloadable skins and texture packs will be available for purchase from the PlayStation Store "soon" after the game launches this week for PS3. Mojang said Sony-specific skins and texture packs "would be cool," but did not confirm any are in development.
Regarding Remote Play support between the console and portable versions, Mojang said, "We don't know yet, sorry."
The PlayStation versions of Minecraft have large shoes to fill. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition passed 10 million in lifetime sales last week. The game has now sold more than 10 million copies on three different platforms: PC, Xbox 360, and mobile.
