Microsoft discusses how it would approach Halo movie-December 2024
Dec 27, 2024 1:11 AM

Today at the 2013 Game Developers Conference, franchise director Frank O'Connor confirmed Microsoft is not currently making a Halo movie, but opened up on how the company would approach a film set in the sci-fi universe.

"We're not working on a Halo movie right now," O'Connor said. "I think that if a Halo movie ever happens…we'll just go into it with our eyes wide open."

"We won't be stupid enough to think that we're now mega-stars," he added.

O'Connor's comments came during a question-and-answer session following a panel focused on the Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn Internet video series, which has drawn over 55 million views to date.

He explained that while 343 Industries learned a great deal during its planning and production of Forward Unto Dawn, the scale of the series is "geometrically different" than a film or TV show.

O'Connor suggested that if a Halo movie were to happen, Microsoft would not settle when it came to choosing a director or production company. He said learning to work with the right people was the most important lesson Microsoft learned from the Forward Unto Dawn production process.

The Halo movie famously fell through. Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and his WingNut Films production company were at one time attached to the film, to be directed by Neill Blomkamp, but the project was indefinitely postponed in 2006. Instead, Jackson and Blomkamp would go on to produce and direct, respectively, the sci-fi film District 9.
