Microconsole GameStick delayed, now going head-to-head with PS4-January 2024
Jan 6, 2025 1:11 PM

Due to production delays, the Android-powered microconsole GameStick will now be released on November 15--a date which puts it head-to-head with the PlayStation 4--a PlayJam representative has told Polygon.

Backers of the $80 two-inch console's original Kickstarter campaign started receiving units in late August. The GameStick's public release was first set for September 30, but was later delayed to October 29.

"The date was pushed back to the 15th for no other reason than production and logistics delays," PlayJam chief marketing officer Anthony Johnson said. "GameStop's shipment landed in Texas this morning awaiting customs clearance so it is well on its way."

As Polygon points out, those who have received units are reporting numerous issues with the GameStick, including the system running hot, user interface freezes, and problems connecting to wireless Internet.

A post on the GameStick Kickstarter page explains that a fix has been released for UI freezes, while Internet connectivity issues are the result of the system being too close to other WiFi or Bluetooth devices in the home. A more detailed workaround is explained on the site.

As for the GameStick running hot, PlayJam said, "higher temperatures will be experienced when downloading and / or playing games. Under normal use, the average external temperature of GameStick will be between 40°c and 56°c. This will feel warm and at times hot to the touch."

Powered by Android, the Gamestick features an ARM Cortex A9 CPU and a Mali 400 GPU, as well as 8B of onboard storage and a Micro SD slot. The system also features built-in Wi-Fi, 1080p playback, Bluetooth 4.0, and "full parental control" with content filters.

Included with every $80 package are one Gamestick console, one Bluetooth control, a power adapter, and all other cables needed to get the system running. The console is available to preorder today through Amazon and GameStop, among others.
