Metal Gear Solid is one of the most well-known franchises in gaming today, but its success was not a sure thing upon its initial release. Speaking during a recent Q&A on Twitch, Kojima said the success of 1998 PlayStation One game Metal Gear Solid...snuck up on him.

　　"Neither me nor anyone else expected Metal Gear Solid to sell at all," Kojima said when asked what his favorite game in the series to develop was. "So I was fortunate, because I didn't have to think, 'I have to sell this game this much,' so pretty much all I did was put in that game all the things I really like."

　　The Metal Gear Solid franchise has since spanned numerous sequels across a variety of platforms. As of April 2013, more than 33 million Metal Gear Solid games have been sold.

　　The next game in the series is Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, which launches March 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. It is a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which might not launch until December 2015.
