Kim Kardashian's video game, Kim Kardashian Hollywood, is a huge hit in terms of how many people are playing it. We already knew this. But up until now, we didn't know how much money the free-to-play mobile game was bringing in from microtransactions.
Now, Kardashian herself has shared some insight. Writing on Twitter, Kardashian mentioned an "$80 million video game check," presumably her share of Hollywood's revenue.
sorry I'm late to the party guys I was busy cashing my 80 million video game check & transferring 53 million into our joint account
On February 17, Glu Mobile's chief exec, Niccolo de Masi, revealed Kim Kardashian Hollywood has been downloaded more than 42 million times since launch in summer 2014. Players had logged around 3.29 billion sessions and spent around 35,000 years in the game.
The exec explained that the reason the game is so popular is because its promotion feels "authentic." Kardashian posts about the game to her Twitter and Instagram pages occasionally, bringing it to the attention of over 100 million combined followers.
De Masi added that Hollywood aims to feel like a "living, breathing" game because it constantly evolves based on what Kardashian does in real life. In that sense, it will continue to feel fresh, giving Glu more and more opportunities to make even more money from it.
Kardashian's half-sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner have since launched their own game from Glu Mobile. Looking ahead, Glu Mobile will release a Taylor Swift game later this year.
