Killzone 2 confirmed for E3?
Killzone 2 confirmed for E3?-October 2024

What we heard: After months of uncertainty, plans for the forthcoming E3 are finally gelling. Hard evidence of that fact has been emerging in the form of invitations to after-hours events being held in conjunction with the expo.

One such invite all but officially confirmed that one of the most talked-about games from a prior E3 will be resurfacing this year. This morning, selected editors at select games press outlets received a semimysterious invitation for a function on the night of July 10.

Sent through an external media company, the black invite (pictured above) was a simple card with the event locale and serial number on the back over the PlayStation logo. On the front, the invite has a picture of a Hellghast, one of the Nazi-like villains in the PlayStation 2 sci-fi shooter Killzone--and its still-unnamed sequel on the PlayStation 3. (The Hellghast also appeared in Killzone: Liberation for the PlayStation Portable.)

Many are taking the invite as proof that the new Killzone will be at this year's E3. Any further doubts were largely dispelled by the fact the Federal Express envelope the invitation came in bore the words "Killzone 2 Invitation" on the front.

If true, it will be the first public showing of the new Killzone other than its controversial E3 2005 trailer and a brief tech-demo trailer at the 2007 Game Developers Conference, where Sony promised more details about the game at E3. According to European press reports, the Guerilla Games-developed shooter is the most expensive entertainment project in Dutch history, with a budget of over $20 million.

The official story: Despite mounting proof that the new Killzone will be shown at E3, Sony Computer Entertainment America remains tight-lipped. "We have not relayed any news about Killzone 2 for E3 at this point," a rep told GameSpot. "The invitation you saw is for a very exclusive media event."

Bogus or not bogus?: Almost assuredly not bogus, but the world won't know for sure until July 10.
