In a new interview for Marc Maron's popular podcast WTF released Thursday, Kate Winslet opened up to the actor and comedian about the downsides of being propelled to stardom at the age of 21 when she starred in James Cameron's blockbuster Titanic. Winslet had noticeably not leaned into that film's success to land further roles in blockbuster movies but instead pursued indie productions.

　　"I went into self-protective mode right away [after Titanic came out]," Winslet told the comedian. "I was subject to a lot of personal physical scrutiny, I was criticized a lot, and the British press were quite unkind to me."

　　While Winslet did not reference specific articles or criticisms, it's unsurprising to hear Winslet felt she had little recourse but to withdraw. Libel laws in the U.K. vary greatly from in the United States--across the pond, the burden of proving media stories are defamatory goes to the subject being written about. Rather than try to fight with litigation, Winslet instead opted to keep working, noting she was "still learning how to act" and "didn't want to make mistakes and blow it." It wasn't until Winslet turned 25 and had a daughter that "all of that stuff evaporated a bit."

　　Things have now come full circle, as Winslet has recently reunited with Cameron for Avatar 2 (and will be involved with another subsequent sequel), which is expected to be out December 16, 2022 and last year began production after undergoing self-quarantine to assure everyone's safety. Winslet joked to Maron that she has "slightly lost track" of how many follow-up movies the director is planning for Avatar.
