The soundtrack written for Thatgamecompany's PlayStation 3-exclusive adventure game Journey has been nominated for a Grammy Award.
Composer Austin Wintory (Grace, Captain Abu Raed) received the nomination for Journey's soundtrack in the Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media category in the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, the only video game to be nominated at this year's awards. It also marks the first time a video game soundtrack has been nominated in the Grammys.
Wintory is up against John Williams for The Adventures Of Tintin--The Secret Of The Unicorn; Ludovic Bource for The Artist; Hans Zimmer for The Dark Knight Rises; Howard Shore for Hugo; and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Last year, American composer Christopher Tin took home the Grammy Award for Civilization IV opening song Baba Yetu, marking the first time a video game composition has won in the awards' history.
Journey was released on March 13 this year and quickly became the PlayStation Network's fastest-selling game of all time.
The Journey soundtrack is made up of 18 tracks composed and arranged by Wintory. It reached position 116 on the Billboard sales charts and made over 4000 sales in its first week of release, the second-highest charting video game soundtrack to date after 2007's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
Wintory told The Guardian earlier this year that he used the cello "to undergo a metamorphosis that exactly mirrors what the player is going through".
