Hazelight announced a release date for its co-op action platformer It Takes Two during The Game Awards. The game is coming on March 26, 2021 to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer that showed the game in action for the first time.

It Takes Two features a couple considering separating, Cody and May, as they work through their differences and learn how to rely on each other. The announcement promises zany characters and scenarios like gangster squirrels and magic snow globes as part of the adventure.

Now Playing: It Takes Two Reveal Trailer | Game Awards 2020

Like Hazelight's last game, A Way Out, this one is built strictly for co-op and has no single-player option. You can play local co-op or online. And like in A Way Out, if you play online you can use a Friend Pass to invite a buddy who doesn't own the game to play along with you. Essentially, it's the experience of inviting a friend to play couch co-op, but socially distanced.

"At Hazelight, we’re always looking to push the boundaries of what’s expected in games, and It Takes Two is going to make your head spin!" said game director Josef Fares, in the announcement. "We've taken all our learnings from our previous games and kicked it up a notch, linking the narrative and gameplay mechanics for a genre-bending experience. Players will journey through crazy challenges in a fantastical world unlike anything they’ve ever seen. It’s going to be completely different from what people have come to expect from a co-op game!"

It Takes Two will be $40 when it launches in March. Those who purchase on PS4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions for free on the same date.

It Takes Two debuted at EA Play in June, but at the time it was mostly an overview of the game's environments. For more details, including a promise to save your marriage through the power of video games, check out our interview with Fares.
