Today, Intel released its latest chip, the Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processor, which is being targeted specifically at gamers. Created using Intel's 0.13-micron process technology, the P4 EE uses hyper-threading technology to reach speeds of up to 3.2 gigahertz. It also sports a beefy 512-kilobyte Level 2 cache, a beefier two-megabyte Level 3 cache, and a positively meaty 800 MHz system bus speed.
Intel's press release was quickly followed by announcements by PC-makers of new, game-centric machines equipped with the P4 EE. Alienware announced its Area-51 series would now include the processor, and Dell touted its Dimension XPS desktop, which will also be based on the chip. "Any kind of high-end, processor-intensive application is going to benefit from the increased cache of the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition," said a Dell spokesperson.
