Infogrames Entertainment, with the help of European broadcaster Canal Plus, announced Friday the launch of Game One, the first video game channel in Europe.
To go live on the second day of the European Consumer Trade Show (ECTS), the new satellite channel will feature six programs offering news, reviews, features, and inside perspectives 24 hours a day. Based in Paris, Game One is billed as the first all-day television channel dedicated to the video gaming industry.
Game One estimates that by the end of 1998 1.3 million French households with three million potential viewers will receive the channel via Canal Satellite, and a US rollout is expected sometime in the near future.
"The one-two punch of Europe's leading digital broadcaster with one of the largest worldwide publishers brings a powerful new presence to the airwaves," said Gilles Lioret, president of Game One. "We are looking to pioneer an entirely new medium for the video game market, one that deserves its own channel. Much like MTV did with music more than a decade ago, we are pushing video games onto the television screen."
