Infinity War: Why Screenwriters Skipped Over Thanos Getting The Power Stone On Xandar-November 2024
Nov 21, 2024 11:20 AM

With the recent digital release of Avengers: Infinity War, the audio commentary featuring directors Joe and Anthony Russo and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely has given viewers a ton of insight into the production of the film and what didn't make the final cut.

Early on in the audio commentary, Markus discussed something many fans of the film have been asking: "Why don't we see Thanos get the power stone from Xandar?" We last saw the stone in Guardians of the Galaxy, after Peter Quill and company handed it off to the Nova Corps. However, when Infinity War begins, Thanos already has the stone on his gauntlet. Why did the film skip over that?

Now Playing: Everything We Learned From Avengers: Infinity War's Special Features

"We wrote versions of Thanos attacking Xandar, and it had a similar purpose in the script to what Knowhere does now," explained Markus. "It was a place where Thanos and Gamora encounter each other. But the fact of the matter is, you know exactly what--if Thanos went to Xandar to get that stone, you know what happened. It was a big battle, and he got it."

Markus and McFeely went on to say that it was cut so the movie wouldn't feel repetitive. Additionally, cutting it would maximize how emotional moments would feel when Thanos got his hands on another Infinity Stone.

The audio commentary shed a lot of light on Infinity War, including the surprise cameo voice over which opens up the entire film. You can hear the commentary track if you pick up the movie digitally, which is out now, and it comes with a few more cool special features. However, there won't be a physical home release until Tuesday, August 14. Make sure to check out what we learned from the special features to see what is in store when you pick up a copy.
