Bo is a 2D platformer where you are placed in a world where there is only one goal: You must get to the door. However, doing this is not as easy as it sounds. The door will often be placed in a hard-to-reach area where you must draw blocks to assist you in reaching it. You will often find yourself experimenting with drawing and erasing blocks to get there, but should you accidentally trap yourself or just want to start fresh again, you always have the option to reset the world. While this can become challenging or frustrating, there is always the option to receive assistance with help boxes. After the help bar fills up, you will then be allowed to press H for Help so that boxes with pictures of what to do are dropped from the sky to help show you the steps needed to finish the level.
For the first 20 levels, you are given one color with which to work. To reach the door, you must draw and erase red blocks to create a pathway to the door. After working with a few levels of just red blocks, a new element is added to the game where you must get all the keys dispersed around the level to unlock the door and advance. Then, after level 20, you are given a second color to work with as you will now have both green and red blocks to guide you through, in addition to obtaining the keys. This premise is simple enough where countless numbers of levels and variations can be created to keep the game going for a long time.
One nice addition to this game would have been a level-select system. After beating a level, you are advanced to the next stage. However, there is no way to go back to the previous level once you have completed the stage. On the main menu screen, you are given the option to continue or start a new game. So if you accidentally start a new game, you've just lost all your progress. This simple addition would help in a big way, even if it came in the form of some old-school games where you are given a code after you beat a level and type in that code to automatically advance to that stage. Outside of this small gripe, this game will provide you with thought-inducing entertainment and is definitely worthy of its honorable mention at the IGF awards.
