Starfield director Todd Howard has said the sci-fi RPG bears some similarities to Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption II. Speaking to IGN, Howard said the aim with Starfield is to transport you into a world that feels authentic and makes you believe you are really there. Howard said in this way, Starfield might be similar to Red Dead Redemption II, an engrossing game that took players back in time to the American West to live out the wrangler fantasy.
"I think it also has a flow, probably has more of a feeling of a [Red Dead Redemption II], right? Like I'm living the Western fantasy. So in this, you're living this science fiction explorer fantasy, and sometimes that's being on a barren planet and nothing is going on," Howard said.

Now Playing: Starfield Combat Explained
Starfield has similarities to Elder Scrolls and Fallout as well, Howard said, in terms of the "minute-to-minute" feel and and mechanics.
"So for me, it's games that where I feel I am rooted in the reality of this universe of the game, and everything else kind of disappears," Howard said of his inspirations for Starfield.
Starfield releases on September 6 for Xbox and PC. It's included on Xbox Game Pass as a day-one new release. You can play five days earlier by purchasing the $100 or $300 premium editions, or buying an upgrade for $35.
In case you missed the Starfield Direct on June 11, plenty of new details on the game were shared, including PC specs, why the game is so massive, and how space combat works. There are a number of key questions about the game that remain unanswered, however.
Additionally, Starfield preorders are already steeply discounted, so if you're planning to buy the game, now might be a good time to lock in your order.
