Hideo Kojima’s Game Design Theories Were Perfectly Detailed by Anthony Hopkins in Westworld-November 2024
Nov 7, 2024 8:12 PM

As you might already know, Hideo Kojima is hugely fond of movies and TV series. It comes as no surprise, then, that he's been watching HBO's new Westworld series.

We've already covered Westworld's gaming influences (Grand Theft Auto and Bioshock, mostly) according to its creators, the Nolans. But apparently, the rabbit goes much deeper in the hole: Hideo Kojima tweeted a couple days ago that in Westworld's second episode, world famous actor Anthony Hopkins recited words that perfectly describe his game design theory.

Watched "Westworld" E2. What Anthony Hopkins said in that story was an exact theory of my game design. pic.twitter.com/KbJaXQ5N8b

Here's the full excerpt, in case you're curious:

They come back because of the subtleties, the details. They come back because they discover something they imagined well-known they haven't noticed before. Something they fall in love with. They are not looking for the story that tells them who they are. They already know who they are. They are here because they wanted a glimpse of who they could be.

For those who have been watching Westworld, the underlying game-inspired bits are surfacing more and more. It wouldn't be surprising if more game directors mentioned the show in the same way Kojima just did.

Speaking of the Metal Gear Solid creator, he's still very much working on Death Stranding. Last we heard, the game should probably be launched in either 2018 or 2019 since Kojima mentioned that it will be out before the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Kojima also confirmed that Death Stranding is an open world action game with some reportedly innovative multiplayer elements; it will also support 4K & High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology. The project received significant investment from Sony and it will release on PlayStation 4 first, but a PC port is also planned.
