CANNES - One of the most talked about games at Milia Games is Hidden and Dangerous, no small feat since almost no one had ever heard of it prior to the show. Produced by Czech developer Illusion Softworks, Hidden and Dangerous has remained one of gaming's best-kept secrets, a fact that's all the more remarkable considering it is only two months away from being released.
Hidden and Dangerous is a squad level, multi-perspective, tactical strategy game with strong action elements. It is set in the latter years of World War II and confronts the player with a series of missions spread across six different locations. According to the developers, the game's scenarios were developed in consultation with WWII veterans, and great pains were taken to ensure the look and feel of the environments is as realistic as possible.
Players control a squad of four soldiers, which can be controlled individually or as a group. A variety of perspectives - overhead, third person, first person, and sniper - are available, letting you quickly get the best possible view of the action. The level of control over your soldiers is incredible; almost any physical maneuver you can think of is possible, including running in one direction while looking and shooting in another. Gameplay is smooth and movement is precise - even in its unfinished state, Hidden and Dangerous looks highly polished.
Hidden and Dangerous uses a proprietary graphics engine developed by Illusion Softworks, and it seems perfectly matched to the gameplay - fast, responsive, and surprisingly detailed. Vehicles, buildings, and weapons are all nicely represented, and the movement between views is essentially instantaneous.
Take 2 did not have any screenshots of Hidden and Dangerous available at the show, but Illusion Softworks provided several recent shots on its web site. Stay tuned for more images and additional information about the game in the very near future.
