Here's How COVID-19 Could Impact BlizzCon 2020-December 2024
Dec 29, 2024 2:11 AM

Blizzard is closely monitoring the situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, with the company possibly canceling or postponing this year's BlizzCon because of it.

The event's executive producer Saralyn Smith said in a statement that not only is it "too early to know" if BlizzCon 2020 can happen because of the increased social distancing mandates, but it will also likely be "a few months" before the company will have enough information to make an informed decision.

Now Playing: Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, & Expansions Announced At BlizzCon 2019 - GS News Update

"As events around the world announce cancellations, postponements, or shifts to an online format in response to COVID-19, we're seeing questions about our plans for this year's BlizzCon and we want to provide a quick update," Smith wrote. "While we're all hopeful things will look better later in the year, the bottom line is that at this point it's too early to know whether BlizzCon 2020 will be feasible.

"The health of our community, employees, and everyone who helps with the show is our top consideration. It might be a few months before we know for certain if or how we'll proceed, but as soon as we have a meaningful update, we'll share it."

Even though Blizzard is unsure whether BlizzCon 2020 will move forward as planned, the company is still "actively working to finalize our plans." The company didn't detail what these plans are.

The dates for this year's BlizzCon have yet to be announced, as they are traditionally revealed in April. Though the event tends to take place in the fall, the company settled specifically in the month of November since 2013 for the annual showcase. Every subsequent convention was held at the beginning of the month since then.

Last year's BlizzCon, which ran from November 1-2, brought a bunch of news, including the reveals of both Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. We also saw expansions for Hearthstone and World of Warcraft, heard Blizzard's response to the Hearthstone controversy, and more.
