Earlier this week, the world learned of Gearbox's plans to release Halo Custom Edition, a new version of Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC. While Halo CE is multiplayer-only, it does have an advantage over the regular PC Halo--it will let players import content created with the collection of tools known as the Halo Editing Kit (HEK).
Today, both Halo CE and the Halo Editing Kit are available on GameSpot DLX. Although it requires a Halo PC CD and retail key to install, Halo CE is a stand-alone 174MB .exe. Halo CE is supported by Gearbox, not Microsoft or Bungie, and the developer has a useful FAQ on its reworked edition of the game.
The HEK is a bit heftier in size than Halo CE. The 271MB download will let players create multiplayer environments, as well as the textures and models required for scenery objects and sky boxes.
